Calm Body, Calm Mind, Better Recovery

Facing an upcoming surgery can be a stressful experience. Our Pre-operative Massage is a gentle and supportive treatment designed to help you prepare your body and mind, supporting a smoother and faster recovery. This is a clinically focused approach helping you to feel more relaxed and in control before your procedure.

Prior To Your Treatment

Before beginning, our therapist will review your surgical details and consult any relevant medical notes, with your consent, to customize a treatment for you. For example, prior to knee surgery, we focus on gently relaxing the surrounding hip and thigh muscles to ensure the area is as flexible and free of restriction as possible. The massage area will be strictly limited to segments not directly related to the surgical site to ensure safety and adherence to preoperative protocols.

The Treatment

Our therapists use very light, gentle, and rhythmic strokes with a focus on parasympathetic nervous system and comfort. This massage focuses on soothing your nervous system, reducing muscle tension, and optimizing local circulation to prepare your body for surgery.

Who Is This Treament Suitable For?

Pre-operative massage may be beneficial for clients preparing for a range of procedures, including:

  • Knee or hip replacement surgery.
  • Cosmetic procedures.
  • Abdominal surgeries and C-sections.
  • Dental surgeries.

Key Benefits

  • A gentle massage helps calm the nervous system and reduce stress, promoting a sense of well-being.
  • Gentle manipulation in surrounding areas helps reduce general swelling and inflammation, which can minimize recovery time after the procedure.
  • Enhances blood flow bringing more oxygen and nutrients to your tissues, which can support the healing process after surgery.
  • Prepares tissues for incision and manipulation, potentially reducing scar tissue post-operation, especially when combined with post-op care.
  • By reducing physical and mental tension, you can get the restful sleep your body needs before a major event.

Important: Timing & Contraindication

How soon to book: The most common recommendation is to book your pre-operative massage a few days to a week before your surgery.

Important Safety Note:

You must consult with your surgeon or medical team to ensure you are medically cleared. We cannot perform a pre-operative massage if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Active infection, fever, or contagious illness
  • Recent blood clots or risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Any acute injuries or inflammation
  • Unstable medical conditions
  • Immediately before or after surgery without direct medical clearance

MASSAGE PRESSURE LEVEL: Very light to gentle pressure. The focus is solely on stimulating the nervous system and superficial circulation, not on deep muscle work.

Frequently asked questions

It’s very common to have questions about massage before a surgery. We’ve answered the most important ones here to ensure you feel completely safe and informed.

Yes, if you have clearance from your surgeon. A gentle, relaxation-focused massage is perfectly safe. Our qualified therapists are trained to avoid any techniques (like deep tissue) or areas (like the surgical site) that could be harmful.

This is best scheduled 2-5 days before your procedure. This timing allows your body to fully benefit from the relaxation, but isn’t so close that it interferes with your final hospital preparations. We generally avoid massage on the day immediately before surgery.

Absolutely not. This is very important: the goal of this session is 100% relaxation, not to “fix” a problem. Deep or corrective work can create inflammation, which is the last thing you want before surgery. This will be a gentle, soothing, and calming experience.

No. We will completely avoid the surgical site and the surrounding areas. For example, if you are having knee surgery, we would focus on your back, neck, shoulders, and arms to promote overall relaxation, while avoiding the affected leg entirely.

This depends on your fund. Because this treatment’s primary goal is relaxation and stress reduction, it does not always meet the criteria for a “Remedial Massage” claim. If you also have a specific, separate issue (like chronic neck pain) that we treat remedially in the same session, it may be claimable. Please check with your provider.
