Heal Faster, Recover Better
Recovering from surgery can be a challenging journey. Our Post-operative Massage is a specialized, gentle, clinical treatment designed to support your body's healing process and facilitate a faster return to functional activity.
Prior To The Treatment
Before starting, your therapist will conduct a thorough review of your surgical history, the current phase of your healing, and any specific guidelines provided by your surgeon. This review ensures we adhere strictly to the physician's post-operative protocols and tailor the treatment to your phase of tissue repair.
The Treatment
Our therapists use a very light, rhythmic touch to promote healing without causing discomfort. We focus on techniques such as Manual Lymphatic Drainage, a gentle pumping motion that helps to clear fluid retention, and soothing strokes to ease muscle tension that can build up after surgery.
Once incisions are fully healed, we incorporate myofascial techniques to gently mobilize the surrounding scar tissue, preventing adhesion build-up and reducing tightness, promoting long-term mobility and minimizing the risk of chronic pain.

Key Benefits
- Gentle massage can help soften and flatten scar tissue, improving its appearance and restoring its biomechanical function and flexibility in surrounding joints.
- Lymphatic drainage helps to remove excess fluid and toxins, significantly reducing post-operative swelling.
- Surgery and subsequent reduced mobility can cause tension in other areas (e.g. hips compensating for knee surgery). We focus on these secondary knots to establish a balanced recovery.
- Improved circulation brings vital oxygen and nutrients to the surgical area, aiding in the repair of tissues.
- Soothing techniques can relieve muscle soreness and stiffness that often result from surgery and immobility.
- Helps to calm your nervous system, reducing stress and promoting restful sleep needed for recovery.

Frequently asked questions
Is it really safe to have a massage after surgery?
Yes, but only when you have been cleared by your surgeon and the massage is performed by a qualified therapist. The techniques we use are extremely gentle, specifically adapted for post-op recovery, and we always avoid the unhealed site.
How soon after my surgery can I start?
This depends entirely on your surgeon's advice and the type of surgery. For some procedures, we can begin gentle lymphatic drainage within days to manage swelling. For any direct work on or near the scar, we must wait until the incision is fully closed and healed, which is often 6-8 weeks.
Will the massage hurt my incision or scar?
No. We will never work on an unhealed incision. When the time is right to work on the scar itself (weeks or months later), the techniques are very gentle and designed to improve mobility and reduce pulling, not to cause pain.
What's the main benefit?
The main benefits are twofold: First, it helps manage the primary side effects of surgery, like swelling and bruising (via lymphatic drainage). Second, it treats the secondary 'compensatory' pain—the aches you get in your back, neck, and other limbs from being immobile or moving differently.
Can I claim this on my health fund?
Yes. This is a clinical, rehabilitative treatment performed by a qualified Remedial Massage Therapist to aid in your recovery. Therefore, it is claimable under 'Remedial Massage' with most major Australian private health funds. We will provide a receipt for your claim.
